जैन पुराणों में माता को सर्वोच्च स्थान दिया गया है। पुत्र को जन्म देने से स्त्री का मान बढ़ जाता है और
लोग उसकी प्रशस्ति करते हैं, वैदिक कालीन पिता दस पुत्रों की कामना करते हैं। स्मृति काल में यही पिता आठ
पुत्रों की कामना करता है। मनु के मतानुसार माता का स्थान पिता की अपेक्षा सहस्त्र गुणा उच्चतर है। यही
कारण है कि उन्होंने पतित माता को भी देवकोटि में रखा है। वैदिक परम्परा के पुराणों में माता का सर्वोच्च
स्थान प्रदान किया गया है। जैन पुराणों में माता अत्यधिक श्रद्धेय थी तथा समाज में उसे विशिष्ट स्थान प्रदान
किया गया था। पद्म पुराण वर्णित है कि यर्थात में इस संसार में माता ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ बन्धु है। यद्यपि कन्या विषयक
युक्ति में अन्तर्विरोध है तथापि स्त्रियों का समाज में प्रतिष्ठित स्थान थी पदम पुराण में माता की महत्ता का वर्णन
करती हुई इन्द्र की पत्नी इन्द्राणी का कथन है कि हे माता! तू तीनों लोकों की कल्याण कारिणी माता है, तू ही
मंगलकारी है, तू ही महादेवी है, तू ही पुण्यवती है और तू ही यशस्विनी है। उक्त पुराण में वर्णित है कि संसार
में वह मनुष्य अत्यधिक पुण्यात्मा है, जो कि माता की विनय में तत्पर रहता है तथा किंकरभाव से उसकी सेवा
करता है।
