Article summary

Abstract

The rapid integration of algorithmic surveillance, including remote proctoring and
automated text-matching software, has fundamentally altered the epistemological
and moral landscape of higher education. Ostensibly deployed to safeguard academic
standards, these technologies have inadvertently constructed a “Digital Panopticon,”
transforming the pedagogical bond of trust into an institutionalized presumption of
guilt. This theoretical paper critically examines the sociological and philosophical
fallout of this paradigm shift, conceptualizing it as the “Digigogy Trap”, a systemic
fallacy where institutions attempt to resolve the moral crisis of academic dishonesty
through technological policing. Utilizing Michel Foucault’s framework of panopticism,
the study deconstructs how algorithmic wardens enforce superficial behavioral
compliance rather than authentic moral formation. Furthermore, drawing upon Émile
Durkheim’s theory of anomie, the paper explores how this hyper-competitive,
surveillance-driven ecosystem alienates students, fostering a climate of academic
pressure that rationalizes misconduct as a structural coping mechanism rather than
a mere personal failing. To dismantle this architecture of suspicion, the paper advocates
for a philosophical counterweight rooted in the cultivation of intrinsic “Value
Orientation.” By integrating traditional pedagogical insights focused on awakening
the inner conscience (Antahkarana), the study argues for a systemic return to internal
moral agency. Ultimately, escaping the Digigogy Trap requires the academy to privilege
intellectual responsibility, profound pedagogical trust, and enduring wisdom over
mechanical compliance, rendering the external algorithmic gaze obsolete through the
development of self-sustaining academic integrity.
