- Women empowerment has been a pivotal theme in the socio-political evolution of India, reflecting the changing status of women across historical periods. This research paper delves into the journey of women empowerment in India, tracing its roots from the Vedic era to modern times. In ancient India, women enjoyed significant rights, including access to education and active participation in societal affairs. However, the decline of their status during the later Vedic and medieval periods marked a critical shift, characterized by social constraints such as child marriage, sati, and restricted access to education. The colonial period catalyzed reforms through social movements led by reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Jyotirao Phule, emphasizing the abolition of regressive practices and advocating for women’s education. The freedom struggle saw a resurgence of empowered women who played vital roles in the nationalist movement. Post-independence, constitutional provisions and legislative measures sought to ensure gender equality and promote women’s participation in governance, education, and economic development. Despite significant progress, historical challenges such as caste-based discrimination, patriarchal norms, and socio-economic disparities continue to impede women’s full empowerment.
